The Jireh Community Project operates an Educational Centre (Childcare Centre) for approximately 200 children in the Mitchell’s Plain area. The COVID-19 crisis”had a profound impact on the childcare centre as I had to close the centre in 24 hours. The Department sent a memo on the 17th March at 14:00 and we had to close the centre on the 18th!
“I did not want to lose any employees and SAFT helped me to prevent that. It was setup to save people’s livelihood and it did just that. People could feed their communities and that is we also stand for.” The SAFT funding was a great source of relief as it means that employees could continue to buy food for their families in addition to helping to keep the school “open” and ready for when allowed by the Department of Education. However, “we are probably only able to open in September and my biggest concern is how to survive until then. There is a lot of cost still as we need to pay for debit orders and utilities.”
Children (10 months – 6 years old) receive 3 meals a day at the childcare centre and therefore having to close the centre has had an immense impact on the children and the community. Income for the centre has also declined as some people in the community is now on unpaid leave and being retrenched.
The application process with ABSA was very positive :“I had a positive navigation experience with the ABSA COVID-19 web page, and it was easy to find the SAFT information on the COVID-19 page.
